GTECH TO IMPLEMENT AUTOMATED BUS TICKETING SYSTEM THROUGH LOTTERY AGENTS IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
System is Given to National Lotteries Control Board to Commemorate GTECH’s 15th Anniversary in Trinidad and Tobago
Providence, Rhode Island and Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – (August 19, 2009) – GTECH Corporation announced it will implement a new automated bus ticketing system, which will soon be available at all National Lotteries Control Board of Trinidad and Tobago (NLCB) lottery agents. The new ticketing system will make it possible for individuals using the Public Transport Services Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (PTSC) to purchase bus tickets at their local lottery retailer and have those tickets validated on PTSC buses.
Designed to increase customer convenience and enhance PTSC efficiency, the new ticketing system will be provided free of charge by GTECH and operated at no expense to either the PTSC or the NLCB. This new solution will be available in the first quarter of 2010 and will potentially increase riders on the PTSC; fully automate the auditing of sales and route traffic volumes; eliminate the distribution, stocking, and security costs of managing paper tickets; and eliminate the need for cash transactions on buses.
“We are pleased to offer this new system to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, and to celebrate our 15-year relationship with the NLCB,” said GTECH President and CEO Jaymin Patel. “GTECH is always looking for innovative ways to help lotteries grow their business. This is an added convenience for consumers who can now buy their bus tickets at more than 800 lottery locations. Lottery agents also benefit by the additional foot traffic, which creates an opportunity for increased lottery sales and bill payments.”
GTECH has been the technology provider to the NLCB since 1994, creating more than 2,000 local jobs and helping in the development of small businesses throughout the country. GTECH’s technological capabilities, strategic vision, and deep commitment to community involvement have been key to the success of the NLCB/GTECH partnership over the past 15 years.
“The NLCB and GTECH have enjoyed a very healthy relationship over the past 15 years. This has been underscored by professionalism on both sides. Given the traditions in Trinidad and Tobago, GTECH continues to demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the culture and religious traditions of the country,” NLCB Chairman Louis Lee Sing stated. “The success of our Play Whe game, which regulated an illegal cultural pastime, is perhaps unsurpassed in the world. It is for this reason that we continue to work with GTECH. I congratulate GTECH on their 15th anniversary and wish them continued success in the future here in Trinidad and Tobago.”
This new service is an addition to the commercial services already provided by GTECH, which includes prepaid mobile phone top-ups and bill payments over its lottery terminals. Consumers have the convenience of paying their bills for water, cable or satellite television service, and Internet services at any lottery agent.
“We look forward to working together with the NLCB to raise money for good causes and improve the lives of the citizens of Trinidad for years to come,” said Mr. Patel. “The goal of GTECH’s community involvement has always been to strengthen and enrich the communities where we live and work, and this is a great way to start a new chapter in our relationship with the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”
Funds generated by the NLCB benefit the Government’s Consolidated Fund, which directly impacts the lives of citizens in Trinidad and Tobago. In addition, GTECH has engaged in several community service projects, such as After School Advantage, a program that has brought access to computer technology to several areas throughout the country.
